NTUSlab
Neuroimaging & Therapeutic Ultrasound Laboratory

At NTUS Lab, we are leading a research project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation to develop new strategies for safely and effectively opening the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using low-intensity focused ultrasound (FUS). The BBB is a natural defense mechanism that protects the brain but also prevents most drugs from reaching it, making it one of the biggest challenges in treating neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Our project, running from August 2022 to August 2025, aims to refine this cutting-edge technique to precisely control the opening of the BBB, ensuring safe and targeted drug delivery, including gene therapy vectors. We combine advanced neuroimaging and acoustic monitoring to develop personalized treatment protocols, adapting the therapy to each patient’s needs.
With €193,000 in funding, this research has the potential to revolutionize drug delivery for brain diseases, accelerating the development of neuroprotective and neurorestorative treatments. We collaborate with leading pharmaceutical companies and industry pioneers such as InSightec, ensuring a direct link between scientific discovery and real-world applications.
